I Broke The Other One

11 Mar

Things have been quiet since I was laid up for a while after breaking my other ankle (the good one) last Monday at practice. Looks like I’ll be sitting on the roller derby sidelines for a while now. Oh well. More on that later.

Now that I’ve emerged from my post-surgery, pain-killer induced haze, I’ve been lusting over new yarns and the possibility of new hobbies.

I think I’m finally taking up cross-stitching. After embarking from my pillowed crypt into the sunlight, for the first time in days,  Amy and I went to Wild Card where I picked up this little gem:

It has some really great ideas and information to get started, with a semi-updated website. I’ve been inspired by my internet/derby aquaintance’s work at Knit1, Pour2 to make my own cross-stitch design (featuring dogs I know)– so this is my baby-step towards that. Happy crafting everyone!

An Overdue Update

5 Mar

Moose on Moving Day.

So, a lot of things have been happening in the past few months.

Currently, I’m a wayward couch-surfer in Pittsburgh. All of my belongings, minus a few things, have been moved to my parents’ home outside of Philly. I’ve been spending a few weeks hanging out with friends, doing derby, and wrapping up the one-million loose ends that can’t seem to get tied up.

Oh yeah. We’re also still planning the wedding stuff. I got a dress in San Francisco!

Without going into detail, let’s just say that I’m what Pennsylvania would call a “displaced worker.” I’ve been applying for jobs in the Philly/DE/Baltimore area so my future husband, Moose, and I don’t have to live in my parents’ basement. It’s weird to not have a job or a place of my own. I’ve never been without a job since I started working at a grocery store at age 16.

I have been having a difficult time preparing myself to leave Pittsburgh. This city has been my home for almost a decade. It’s the longest I’ve ever lived anywhere. I’m working on letting go.

Hanging out with friends has been amazing. More of that needs to happen in the next 13 days.

Poptarts For Lunch Was An Awesome Decision

19 Jan

[Poptarts not pictured because they are already gone.]

I have my first of several tests today to get cleared for full-on roller derby business. Usually, on practice days, I try to eat well in preparation. My body really feels it when I fill it with junk. Today is an exception.

Roller Derby Season Starts Today!

I have my bags packed like a little kid waiting for the first day of school.

Good Riddance Day 2011

29 Dec

Even though it’s already tomorrow by the GMT WordPress clock, there are still a few precious minutes left on my watch for December 28th, 2011.

Today has been declared “Good Riddance Day”  by those who feel the need to make every day and event ceremonious. Even though it sounds a bit calculated and concocted, I’m still about it.

I thought long and hard about what I want to get rid of on this day. Since it’s my first time observing this occasion, I tried to think up something impressive, profound, or weighty. Should I get rid of some nagging thing that’s been popping up throughout the last twelve months? Have I been carrying around some kind of emotional baggage for years and years?

Resolutions are opportunities to make-over a negative regret into a positive experience. They’re about challenge and change. I have a number of resolutions that I plan to move from the “wish-I’d-done” column to the “damn,-I-did-that” side. Resolutions are exciting. Regrets, on the other hand, can be painful and send you back-peddling.

2011 has been a banner year and I don’t have much to complain about. There have been ups (the DZR, awesome friends, roller derby) and downs (broken ankles, struggles, falling behind the pace of life), but it’s been good.

This year,  on Good Riddance Day, I’m saying a general goodbye to all of my anxieties in 2011. None of them were particularly difficult to overcome, but when added together, letting them all go by the wayside can only make room for things that are even more awesome.

2011 has been a great time, but I know 2012 is going to be better.
