I have my first of several tests today to get cleared for full-on roller derby business. Usually, on practice days, I try to eat well in preparation. My body really feels it when I fill it with junk. Today is an exception.

Today has been declared “Good Riddance Day”  by those who feel the need to make every day and event ceremonious. Even though it sounds a bit calculated and concocted, I’m still about it.

I thought long and hard about what I want to get rid of on this day. Since it’s my first time observing this occasion, I tried to think up something impressive, profound, or weighty. Should I get rid of some nagging thing that’s been popping up throughout the last twelve months? Have I been carrying around some kind of emotional baggage for years and years?

Resolutions are opportunities to make-over a negative regret into a positive experience. They’re about challenge and change. I have a number of resolutions that I plan to move from the “wish-I’d-done” column to the “damn,-I-did-that” side. Resolutions are exciting. Regrets, on the other hand, can be painful and send you back-peddling.

2011 has been a banner year and I don’t have much to complain about. There have been ups (the DZR, awesome friends, roller derby) and downs (broken ankles, struggles, falling behind the pace of life), but it’s been good.

This year,  on Good Riddance Day, I’m saying a general goodbye to all of my anxieties in 2011. None of them were particularly difficult to overcome, but when added together, letting them all go by the wayside can only make room for things that are even more awesome.

2011 has been a great time, but I know 2012 is going to be better.

I can’t tell you how excited I am to see From the Back of the Room at the Mr. Roboto Project in a few days!!!

After my cousin’s wedding last weekend, I have weddings on the brain. I’m still not making any big plans before the New Year, but I can’t help but think about engagement and wedding rings. Every time I tell someone that I’m “engaged,” their eyes immediately swoop down to look at my left  hand. When this happens, I think how this would be a funny opportunity to casually give someone the finger and they can’t get mad about it– but I always restrain myself.

The DZR and I STILL haven’t gotten our engagement tattoos yet. *Taps foot impatiently*

A lot of people place a lot of importance on the symbol of an engagement or wedding ring. That’s cool for people who care about that but, honestly, I don’t have strong feelings either way. The DZR and I talked about this and I told him that if he had hundreds or thousands of dollars for a ring that probably won’t fit me in ten years, I would rather have an engagement computer or an engagement video camera. Or a pair of engagement roller skates. (I sort-of got this wish with my birthday/engagement skateboard.)

This is Moissanite. Bling, bling.

To the untrained eye, Moissanite is similar to diamonds in general appearance and hardness. It occurs naturally and, sometimes, originates from meteorites.

Peridot (not from space)

Pallasite is a kind of meteorite that can develop Olivene crystallizations. The pretty, translucent pieces of Olivene are called Peridot (which can also form naturally on Earth).

Pallodot is a specific brand of Peridot that comes from a secretly-located asteroid that is TV famous.

The take-away here is the that space gems exist and I want one. I am willing to pass on a fancy blood-diamond (or even an ethically-sourced one) in favor of an intergalactic shiny rock on one condition: Whenever I wear my extra-terrestrial love-ring, I am allowed to say, without irony, “My marriage is out of this world,” and not get punched in the face. Is that too much to ask?
